Worstedopolis (Garry Clarkson 1994).

 

Commissioned by Channel 4 TV as a pilot for their Britain at Work series whilst at film school (PCL/University of Westminster). 


The attempted regeneration of Bradford, Yorkshire from traditional industry to centre for art and tourism, seen through the eyes of the filmaker's father Brian and maternal grandmother Gertrude Ball, who worked in Salt's mill in this former wool capital of the world. Scenes from the time, alongside poetic commentary on northern working class history by Leeds' poet Tony Harrison and actor Barrie Rutter.

Mourners Anonymous (Garry Clarkson, 2016).


Sheffield Doc Fest Short Film Competition. Using ITN archive and stills by Garry Clarkson, examining the life of Jean Charles de Menezes and the scene of one of the capital's worst examples of mistaken identity: the shooting by police of an innocent man suspected of being a suicide bomber about to board a London Underground train, a sense of grief and injustice extending towards others who may have never known the victim or his family.

A vagrant and a 'Yuppie' meet by chance in a quiet church in north London in 1994. A battle of spirit and wills. A puzzle of pride and point of views to be solved. Eventually they will both learn the true value of their own importance.
